Welcome
About the Artist
My name is Hans Schwalm. For over 20 years I studied the fine art of wood carving from the Bavarian master wood and stone sculptor Ludwig Kieninger. Continuing the tradition, I create art and teach in North Texas (Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex area).About the Art
Wood is an inherently beautiful material. It provides a wonderful medium for creating art.I enjoy creating art from wood using the traditional mallet and gauge techniques used by master artisans for centuries.
I create commissioned wood sculptures for individuals, churches, and institutions. Samples of my work are on my gallery page and throughout the blog.
Learn Wood Carving
In addition to creating art works, I teach art and woodcarving to a limited number of students. Students range from beginners to professional wood carvers. Each student works at their own pace. Examples of student's work can be seen on the blog.
In the classes we work on all aspects of the creative process and practical techniques. These include, but are not limited to:
- Developing ideas
- Creating and drawing a design
- Laying out a design
- Safe techniques for using the tools
- Properties of wood and wood grain and how to work with them
- Progressing through the stages of carving from rough-out to detail
- Wood finishing techniques
- Enjoying camaraderie
- Having fun
More details regarding classes can be found on the classes page.

"I really recommend spending time with Hans Schwalm if you are looking for an opportunity to learn real artistry in woodcarving. His ability to teach is amazing. His skill set allows you to become the kind of artist you want to be. I really appreciate his approach to fostering one’s own identity into his art." (Travis Bryant - TBryantStudio.com)
